Illinois Canine Officer Shot, Killed Near Golf Course in Line of Duty

Rockford, IL – A somber day for Rockford law enforcement as a police K-9 officer was tragically shot and killed while on duty this Sunday.

According to a Rockford Police Department spokesperson, the incident occurred during a response to a call near Sandy Hollow Golf Course on Jacqueline Drive. The situation escalated when officers located a suspect on the 2900 Block of 11th Street in south Rockford. During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the death of the K-9 officer and non-life-threatening injuries to the suspect.

The fallen K-9, named “Nyx,” served with the Rockford Police Department. Post-incident procedures were swiftly initiated, with Police Chief Carla Redd engaging the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force to take over the investigation. Further updates are expected from the Task Force or the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.
