Kankakee, IL – A successful negotiation by Kankakee Police led to the peaceful surrender of an armed man, resolving a tense situation that had put local schools on lockdown Tuesday morning.
The incident, which started around 9 a.m. in the 2300 block of E. Maple St., was triggered by a domestic dispute. A woman alerted authorities that her 26-year-old son was armed with a handgun and had allegedly made threats. He had left their home before police arrived.
As officers reached the scene, they saw the man fleeing and securing his waistband. A perimeter was established, and a tactical approach was initiated, including drone surveillance and canine deployment. Nearby schools were put on lockdown as a precaution. After a period of careful negotiation, police successfully convinced the man to surrender without incident.
The lockdown was lifted following his surrender, and the Kankakee Police are further investigating the circumstances of the event.
