Cedar Lake, IN – A man was detained after allegedly using a stolen credit card at a local car dealership, according to the Cedar Lake Police Department.

According to police reports the incident, reported on Wednesday, took place at James Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, where the suspect, posing as ‘David Smith’, allegedly attempted to make a hefty purchase with a VISA debit card linked to a Round Hill, VA, account. The purchase, valued at over $3,000, was only partially completed before the card reached its limit.

Law enforcement officials reportedly coordinated a sting operation that resulted in the arrest of Terrence L. Smith, a 30-year-old Illinois resident. Smith, who allegedly resisted arrest, was reportedly found with multiple fraudulent debit cards and is currently held in Lake County Jail as investigations proceed.

Smith now faces charges of fraudulent purchases, possession of fraudulent cards, and resisting law enforcement, among others. The presumption of innocence applies until proven guilty in a court of law.
