SHERMAN, Ill. – Central Illinois is being hit hard by heavy rainfall tonight, leading to flooded roadways and multiple accidents. Sangamon County received significant rainfall over a short period of time, causing chaos for drivers and first responders alike.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln issued a Flash Flood Warning for Central Sangamon County, including Springfield, Chatham, and Rochester. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen, and flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses were at risk of flooding.
Emergency services were kept busy responding to multiple weather related accidents. One crash occurred on I-55 southbound near 106, where a vehicle hydroplaned, rolled over, and trapped the occupant inside. Another accident earlier at Route 29 and Main Street in Rochester, where two vehicles collided and left one occupant with serious injuries.
Another crash involved a vehicle lying on its side in a ditch with water pouring in with a passenger trapped inside.
The condition of all parties involved in these incidents is unknown at this time.
The event is a reminder to residents to exercise caution and stay alert during severe weather.
