Middle School Student’s quick thinking helped avoid Child Abduction Thursday

STEGER – A middle school students’ quick actions saved her from an attempted abduction attempt Thursday morning.

According to Steger Police, it happen in the 300 Block of 35th Street while the student was walking to Columbia Central Middle School.  After the student left her home, it became apparent someone was following her in an “old brown car.”  Reports say two “dark skinned” men, both wearing black ski masks were riding in the vehicle.  While the student continued walking, one of the men reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and grabbed her arm, attempting to get her inside the car.

The student proceeded to kick the car door during the attempt and was able to run away, eventually hiding among some trees before going back home to report the incident to relatives.

Police are asking anyone with cameras on the 3500 Block of John Street,  300 Block of Craig Court, 3500 Block of Ashland Avenue, or Richton Road between Crystal Lane and Kings Road to check their devices for leads on the vehicle.

“We want students and families to be aware of this incident and take extra precautions today and over the next several day,” Crete-Monee School District 201-U Superintendent Dr. Kara Coglianese said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “Our local police departments have extra law enforcement personnel out in our community at this time, as well.”

“Many arrests would not be possible without the cooperation of others.” Steger Police said Thursday.  “It is critical that residents partner with the Police Department and report any/all suspicious activities.
