WILMETTE, Ill. – A serene afternoon at Gillson Park turned somber as first responders in north suburban Wilmette recovered the body of a 56-year-old man from the waters of Lake Michigan on Wednesday.

Wilmette police and fire departments rushed to the scene, answering a distress call shortly after 5 p.m. The grim find was made by a vigilant paddleboarder who spotted the body around 50 to 100 yards offshore. Despite the efforts of dedicated first responders, the man’s life could not be saved.

Preliminary investigations by the Wilmette police suggest that the individual had not been in the water for an extended period, and there were no immediate signs of trauma.

Authorities are now collaborating with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
