FORD COUNTY, IL – The Ford County Public Health Department is joining the rest of the nation in observing April as Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This annual event highlights the importance of early detection in reducing morbidity and increasing the long-term survival of oral cancer patients.

As part of the observance, the department is emphasizing the need for oral cancer screenings to be incorporated into routine dental exams. Dentists play a crucial role in detecting oral cancer in its early stages when it is most treatable. Regular screenings can identify precancerous or cancerous lesions, providing patients with the best chance for successful treatment outcomes.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), over 53,000 new cases of oral and oropharyngeal cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, with more than 10,000 resulting in death. Early detection and timely treatment can increase survival rates to 90%, underscoring the importance of regular screenings.

The Ford County Public Health Department is committed to promoting oral cancer awareness and encouraging individuals to take control of their oral health. They encourage everyone to schedule regular dental exams and discuss oral cancer screening options with their dentist.
