Chicago, Illinois – According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a significant phishing scam targeting drivers with fraudulent unpaid toll notices has been sweeping through multiple states since early March 2024.
Over 2,000 complaints have been logged with the IC3, revealing a pattern of deceptive texts that falsely claim recipients owe money for road tolls. These messages typically feature a bogus link impersonating state toll services and fluctuating phone numbers across states.
The smishing scam involves texts that specify an “outstanding toll amount,” usually around $12.51, threatening a $50.00 late fee to pressure victims into clicking a fraudulent link. The FBI urges anyone who receives such messages to file a complaint at www.ic3.gov, including the origin phone number and the fake website mentioned in the text.
It’s critical to verify toll charges directly through official toll service websites and to contact their customer service if needed. Additionally, for those who have clicked on such links, the FBI recommends securing personal and financial information immediately and disputing any unfamiliar charges.
