Las Vegas, New Mexico – Severe thunderstorms could sweep across northeast and east central New Mexico between 2 and 10 p.m. Saturday, bringing the risk of large hail, strong winds, and frequent lightning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Marginal to Slight Risk for severe storms exists for areas including Las Vegas, Tucumcari, Clayton, and portions of I-25 and I-40 corridors. Storms are expected to develop over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and move east into a more unstable environment, where damaging wind gusts and one-inch hail are possible.

Travelers should stay alert along U.S. 54 and U.S. 84 where rapidly changing weather could affect visibility and road conditions. Outdoor plans, especially in Mora, Colfax, and Union counties, may be disrupted by sudden downpours and lightning. Those living in mobile homes or without sturdy shelter should have a backup plan in place before storms arrive.

Storm chances taper off by late evening, but additional alerts may be issued if storms intensify or shift southward.
