Northbound I-55 Accident Involving Multiple Buses Shuts Down Interstate

Channahon, IL – A major multi-vehicle accident occurred Tuesday morning just before 9 AM on the northbound lanes of the I-55 Des Plaines River Bridge involving multiple buses, leading to a complete shutdown of the interstate.

According to the Channahon Fire Protection District (FPD), the accident, reported at 8:45 AM, prompted a full still alarm and an EMS Box 3 request, mobilizing emergency responders from Minooka, Troy, Wilmington, and Elwood. Authorities are advising drivers to avoid the area while the scene is being cleared.

According to the Braidwood Police Department, the incident involved three Reed Custer School buses, and there are no serious injuries reported. The students are being relocated to a local gas station off I-55 to facilitate the Illinois State Police’s traffic crash investigation. Once completed, the children will return to Reed Custer Middle School with police assistance for reunification. Further updates are expected at 10:30 AM.
