Streator, IL – The Streator Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams have achieved cardiac arrest survivability rates that substantially surpass national averages. This success is attributed to their adoption of the “Culture of Excellence in Resuscitation” protocol.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart function, which can be immediately fatal without swift intervention. The Streator Fire Department reported a 61.9% rate of restoring heart function in cardiac arrest cases they handled in 2023, a figure that starkly contrasts with the national average of 27.9%. With 23% of the patients able to resume their normal lives, significantly higher than the 8.9% national average.
These impressive statistics highlight the effectiveness of the Streator Fire Department’s rigorous training and dedication. Annually, all EMS personnel undergo extensive training and practice to refine their emergency response skills. This commitment has evidently paid off, offering residents of Streator a significantly higher chance of survival and recovery after cardiac arrest events compared to national figures.
The Streator Fire Department extends its gratitude to the Vermillion Valley Emergency Communications Center and OSF Center for Health Streator for their crucial support in achieving these outstanding results. Their collaboration has been instrumental in saving lives and enhancing the quality of emergency medical care in the region.
