PALOS HEIGHTS – Keep a close eye on your dog for the next four to six weeks:  Coyote breeding season is about to begin.

“The coyote gets your dog to chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. Then the outcome is tragic as they can & will attack/kill your pets. Just be aware it can happen to your beloved pet.” Palos Heights Police said in a warning to residents Tuesday.

While most dogs killed during this time by Coyotes tend to be of a smaller breed, Coyotes have been known to kill dogs weighing 75 pounds and up. While coyote attacks are rare, they are frequently spotted across Illinois.

“Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days,” Palos Heights Police said. “Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.”

Common ways to keep your pet safe this time of year include avoid leaving garbage or food outside, walk your dog on a leashed and never leave a dog unattended, even in a fenced yard. Coyotes have been known to jump fences over 6 feet tall to obtain food.
