New Lenox, IL – The New Lenox Fire Department has been conducting prescribed burns in Hickory Creek Preserve this week, located near Lincoln-Way Central High School, as a vital part of vegetation management.

Prescribed burns, also known as controlled burns, are intentionally ignited fires under expert supervision. These burns serve multiple purposes: they reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires by eliminating dead and combustible vegetation, restore nutrients to the soil, and help certain plant species to germinate. Firefighters and land managers use this technique to foster a healthy balance in the preserve’s ecosystem.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant during these operations. Smoke from the burns might be visible and could be mistaken for an emergency situation. Officials ask the community to stay informed about the schedule of prescribed burns and to avoid areas where they are taking place for safety reasons and to ensure the effectiveness of these environmental efforts.
