Williamson County Deputies Uncover Alleged Wire Theft; Suspect Arrested with Drugs

Williamson County, IL – A suspicious vehicle report led Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies to a theft in progress near Lake of Egypt on February 15, 2024.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:45 a.m., deputies encountered James A. Avant at a utility substation on Power Plant Road. Avant was allegedly attempting to load a large spool of wire into his pickup. During the investigation, Avant reportedly admitted the wire was not his and was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed Avant was allegedly in possession of Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and cited for possession of Methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of adult-use cannabis in a motor vehicle.

Avant is currently held at the Williamson County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking to identify the company or subcontractor owning the stolen wire and encourages public assistance.
