Winnebago County, WI – Boaters across Winnebago County are being urged to use caution this week as high water levels continue to impact several major waterways at the start of the 2026 boating season.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, elevated water levels have prompted Slow No Wake ordinances along portions of the Fox River, Wolf River, and Rat River. These restrictions are currently in effect from Lake Butte des Morts through county lines and along key stretches of connected waterways.

Officials say the high water conditions can create hazardous boating environments and increase the risk of shoreline damage. Boaters are encouraged to frequently check for updated restrictions, as conditions may change throughout the season.

Authorities also raised concerns about congestion near waterfront properties. In past years, residents have reported limited access to private piers due to boats anchoring too close to shore. Additional complaints have included trespassing, littering, and disruptive behavior in these areas.

The sheriff’s office is asking recreational users to respect private property and maintain safe distances from shorelines to ensure access for homeowners and reduce conflicts.

Winnebago County, located in northeast Wisconsin and home to popular boating destinations connected to Lake Winnebago, typically sees increased water traffic this time of year.

Officials emphasize that safe and respectful boating practices will help ensure all users can enjoy the waterways throughout the season. Updates will be provided as water levels and conditions evolve.
