Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) announced Tuesday schools in the state would close for the remainder of the school year while the country battles the spread of coronavirus.

“I am ordering all K-12 to close and cease in-person instruction for the duration of the 2019-2020 semester,” said Kelly during a press conference Tuesday. “The reality of this pandemic is that it cannot be controlled statewide if school buildings return to normal operations,”

Kansas announced 16 new cases of coronavirus with one death reported today.

“Today’s actions will give educators and parents a sense of what’s coming so they can begin to adapt and make plans needed.”

With the closures, Kansas becomes the first school in the Nation to completely suspend face-to-face sessions for the remaining 2019-2020 academic school year. Earlier tonight, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis said he is giving parents the option to hold children back a year as he announced all required K-12 testing to be canceled.
