MATTESON, Ill. — As temperatures plummet below freezing, icy conditions have wreaked havoc on the roadways of Illinois and Northwestern Indiana. Deputies and emergency personnel are responding to hazardous conditions, with multiple accidents and spinouts being reported.
The most significant is an 18-vehicle pileup that unfolded on Vollmer Road over I-57 in Matteson. The Illinois State Police are actively on the scene, but details surrounding the cause or potential injuries remain unknown.
Elsewhere in the Chicago area, Wednesday morning commuters are being met with treacherous travel. The inbound Edens Expressway is shut between Old Orchard and Dempster. Likewise, icy patches are responsible for multiple collisions on the Stevenson Expressway ramp heading to northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Not to be outdone, the inbound Bishop Ford at the Stony Island Feeder is also seeing significant delays due to earlier incidents.
In Indiana, the situation is no better. Schererville police have shut down US HWY 41 in both directions at the old iron bridge near Lowe’s, following an accident with injuries. The bridge is currently an ice sheet, preventing any safe passage. Salt trucks are en route, and motorists are advised to find alternative routes until conditions improve.
Authorities across both states urge drivers to exercise caution, reduce speeds, and allocate additional travel time.
