CHAMPAIGN — First responders rushed to a crash scene in the 1300 block of Cobblestone Way Tuesday afternoon after a pickup truck veered off Interstate 57 and plunged into a pond.

An alert witness who was driving by at the time, saw the dire scene unfold as the driver struggled underwater. Without hesitation, he parked his vehicle, sprinted to the pond, pulling the driver to safety.

The victim’s attempt to roll his window down had sped up the sinking. After knocking on neighboring doors, first responders were eventually alerted.

The driver, now out of immediate danger, awaits further medical evaluation.
