Decatur, IL – The Illinois Raptor Center recently highlighted the importance of bird banding and the vital role the public plays in avian research. Banding, a technique over a century old, is crucial for studying bird populations. 

Researchers are actively involved in a banding project, but the center emphasizes the significant impact of public participation. If anyone finds a bird, dead or alive, with a band, they are encouraged to report the number to the US Geological Survey at www.reportband.gov

This information contributes valuable data on the bird’s lifespan, travel distance, and health, enriching the ongoing research. Participants will receive a certificate and insights from the bander’s reports, fostering a deeper understanding of bird life.
