Will County, IL – Child Death Believed Accidental Following Suspected Heroin, Fentanyl Ingestion

Joliet, Illinois – A 12-year-old girl lost her life on Sunday following suspected ingestion of heroin and fentanyl in Joliet, Illinois. Responding to an emergency call just before 8:30 a.m., Joliet Police found the young girl unresponsive at a residence on the 1500 block of East Washington Street. Immediate efforts to revive her included CPR and the administration of Narcan.

According to investigators preliminary findings suggest the tragic incident was accidental. Colette Bancroft, the victim’s 35-year-old mother, was present and later arrested for possession of a controlled substance found in her purse.

Transported urgently to Silver Cross Hospital, and later to Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, the girl was pronounced deceased shortly after 5:00 p.m. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has been notified, and detectives continue to investigate the full circumstances of this heartbreaking incident. No further information has been made available as the investigation remains ongoing.
