Champaign County, IL Arrest Today: Man Charged After Crash Injures Juvenile

Champaign, IL – A man has been arrested following a late-night crash involving a vehicle and a juvenile bicyclist near the University of Illinois campus.

According to the University of Illinois Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:35 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2026, to the intersection of East John Street and South Fifth Street in Champaign for a reported crash. Upon arrival, officers located a damaged bicycle and a heavily damaged vehicle that had come to rest in nearby bushes.

Investigators say that after reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses, the driver allegedly struck a juvenile bicyclist in the intersection before crashing into a concrete barrier on the sidewalk. The vehicle then came to a stop near a building, which was not struck.

Police identified the driver as 30-year-old Suleyman Komekov of Champaign. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, reckless driving, and disobeying a stop sign. According to officials, he was later arraigned and released pending trial.

Authorities say the juvenile bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred in Champaign County within the Urbana-Champaign campus area, part of central Illinois. Police have not released additional details about the events leading up to the crash.

Officials note that all charges are allegations, and the case remains under investigation as it moves through the legal process.
