Champaign Man Arrested in Atlanta in Connection to July Homicide

Champaign, IL – A Champaign man linked to a July homicide has been arrested in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to Champaign Police the incident originated on W. Springfield Avenue on July 3, 2023 after 27-year-old Marcus Catchings, a Champaign resident, was killed when he succumbed to a gunshot wound, despite paramedic intervention.

The ensuing investigation yielded a crucial piece of evidence – gunshot residue on the apartment door. This discovery prompted a full-fledged homicide inquiry. 

On August 25, 2023, authorities apprehended 24-year-old William Wesley, also a Champaign resident, in Atlanta, Georgia. Wesley currently awaits arraignment on murder charges, held in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Center.

The Champaign Police Department expressed deep gratitude to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office and the United States Marshal Service for their pivotal roles in advancing this ongoing investigation.
