Chicago Man Arrested in Search of Abandoned Kankakee Home

Kankakee, Illinois – In an unexpected turn during a search operation, Kankakee city police arrested Jerome Simms, a 34-year-old man from Chicago, early this morning. 

According to police reports, officers were reportedly investigating a supposedly abandoned house in the 100 block of North Greenwood around 4 AM for a juvenile suspected of domestic battery. Instead, they allegedly found Simms and a woman on an air mattress in the living room. A handgun and three reported small bags containing a white powdery substance were also allegedly found near them. 

Simms was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, armed violence, and an outstanding warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections. The woman was released while the juvenile police were searching for was not located in the home. Simms is currently detained at Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee.
