WATSEKA – The City of Watseka says it’s ‘not responsible’ for activities at Iroquois County Jail.

“Recently, social media posts have intimated that the City of Watseka is responsible for, or had control over, events taking place at the Iroquois County Jail. The City of Watseka does not own, control, operate or have jurisdiction over the Iroquois County Jail or any governmental entities or departments responsible therefor.” City officials said in a statement Thursday morning.

The message comes after a group of 50 area residents organized a protest Tuesday in wake of the death of 24-year-old Andrea Maiden of Hoopeston.

Maiden was one of two Iroquois County inmates to be found unresponsive at the jail last week.

An autopsy released last week showed no injuries to explain either man’s death.  The autopsies were performed by Coroners in Kankakee and Champagne County.
