Elmhurst, IL – In a display of measured response and training, Elmhurst Police Department (EPD) officers averted a potential tragedy on Monday night.

Responding to a domestic dispute call at a local apartment building, officers were confronted by a 51-year-old man wielding a large hunting knife. The situation escalated when the man, threatening to harm himself, aggressively approached the officers in the lobby of the building.

Utilizing their training in crisis intervention, one officer deployed a Taser to neutralize the threat, allowing his colleagues to secure the man without further incident. The man was then taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
