Cedar Lake Man dead after reportedly running stop sign on Rt 17, slamming into Semi in Kankakee

KANKAKEE – A late night traffic crash Friday between a semi and a car claimed the life of a Cedar Lake man.

According to Illinois State Police, it happened at 9:31 p.m. last night on Route 17 at 16000 East Road in Kankakee County.  That’s when a 2016 Blue Chevrolet Sonic Sedan failed to stop at a stop sign and hit an empty tanker of a 2022 White Peterbilt Truck-Tractor/Tank Trailer.

The deceased was identified Sunday afternoon by Illinois State Police as 35-year-old John. E. Niles of Cedar Lake, Indiana.  The driver of the semi 60-year-old, David W. Nagel of Green Bay, Wisconsin, suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Route 17 was closed for five hours while an investigation into the incident was underway and reopened just before 3 a.m. Saturday morning.
