MORRIS – A 20-year-old Morris woman has died after car troubles last night when she was hit by a passing semi.

According to Illinois State Police, it happened on westbound on Pine Bluff around midnight when 20-year-old Virginia Hayes of Morris was riding as a passenger in a car with friends.

The car reportedly had mechanical issues and Hayes got out of the car while stopped for unknown reasons, inadvertently stepping into the eastbound lane of traffic.  That’s when Hayes was hit by a semi with no trailer attached at the time, owned by a company in Gardner.

Hayes was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
