ALSIP, Ill. – A rabid bat found near the 3600 Block of West 116th Place, Alsip, has prompted health concerns.

The Illinois State Public Health Laboratory confirmed the bat’s rabies status on August 21, 2023, leading local officials to issue a critical warning.

“If exposed to or bitten by a bat, contact your doctor immediately,” stressed Mamadou Diakhate, D.V.M., Administrator at the local animal control center. Residents are advised to leash their dogs, cats, and ferrets outdoors and ensure pets have current rabies vaccinations.

Handling wild animals like bats and skunks is discouraged to prevent potential rabies transmission. Residents discovering incapacitated bats or skunks should contact the Cook County Department of Animal Control.
