Salt Lake City, Utah – Temperatures are set to plunge across Utah tonight, bringing a widespread freeze that could damage crops and freeze pipes across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Freeze Warning begins at 8 p.m. Thursday and continues until noon Friday, with a second round expected from Friday evening through Saturday morning. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s statewide, with colder pockets dropping into the low 20s and even the mid to upper teens in areas like the Sanpete and Sevier Valleys.
Major population centers including Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and West Jordan will all experience freezing conditions, while rural valleys and agricultural face the greatest risk of crop damage. Areas in eastern Box Elder County and the western Uinta Basin could see some of the coldest readings.
The prolonged nature of this event increases the threat, as back-to-back freezing nights can severely impact early-season vegetation and unprotected plumbing systems.
Residents should cover plants, drain sprinkler systems, and insulate exposed pipes immediately. Officials warn that freeze conditions will persist through Saturday morning, and additional advisories could follow if cold air lingers.
