KANKAKEE, Ill. — A harrowing scene unfolded on the Washington Avenue Bridge early Wednesday when a Kankakee officer spotted a woman teetering on the edge around 4 a.m.

Despite urgent appeals, the 31-year-old plunged into the Kankakee River below. Found in shallow waters on the river’s west side, the woman, initially resistant to assistance, was ultimately rescued by officers.

It was later revealed she had been reported missing from the nearby Shapiro Developmental Center by the Illinois State Police. Miraculously, she emerged unscathed from the ordeal.
