KENTLAND, IN – The Kentland Police Department has launched a proactive effort to deter illegal activities in local parks following concerns raised by a resident.
A resident took to Facebook to express worries about men seen recording and taking pictures of children, particularly during baseball and softball games at parks such as Cast Park, Batton Park, and the Brook Baseball Fields.
“This isn’t even where games are played,” the concerned resident said. “Watch your kids. Police cannot do anything besides ask these men to leave, because it’s public property”
Town Marshal Jamie Wirtz responded to the Facebook post in one of his own Thursday evening, stating, “Today I was made aware of a recent Facebook post regarding an individual at one of our parks acting suspiciously. The department has looked into the incident and has gathered the necessary information.” In response to the concerns, the police will be increasing their presence at the parks and games to discourage any illegal activities.
Marshal Wirtz further encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the dispatch center at 219-474-5661. He emphasized the importance of proactive reporting, stating, “We would much rather look into unfounded events rather than receive a call after the fact. In an emergency, please dial 911.”
The Kentland Police Department’s increased presence aims to reassure residents and ensure the safety of children enjoying public spaces. By responding promptly and addressing community concerns, law enforcement hopes to foster a sense of security and deter any potential criminal behavior.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow the age-old adage, “see something, say something.”
