KANKAKEE, Ill. – Wednesday morning marked the inauguration of the River Valley Metro Transfer Station in Kankakee, bringing significant improvements to the city’s transportation infrastructure.

Senator Dick Durbin was present at the ceremony to commemorate the occasion. With a price tag of $4 million, this state-of-the-art facility on Chestnut between Schuyler and Dearborn, partly funded by federal dollars, is set to enhance transportation efficiency for residents and commuters.

Senator Durbin, speaking at the event, emphasized the positive impact of federal investment on local communities. He highlighted the bipartisan infrastructure bill’s role in securing $2.5 million in federal funding for this project. The bill aims to bring back federal dollars to deserving projects that enhance Americans’ overall quality of life.

In addition to the River Valley Metro Transfer Station, Kankakee can also look forward to future federal funding for the Currents of Kankakee County Riverwalk Project, slated for development on the city’s south side. These initiatives underscore the collaborative efforts between federal and local authorities to address crucial infrastructure needs and propel the city’s growth.

The station officially opened to commuters back in February.
