K-9 officer with over 14 million in busts dies in Illinois

CHICAGO –  Illinois State Police are mourning the loss of a beloved K-9 officer, Apollo, who’s career busts totaled over 14 million after he passed away Monday. District 15 Downers Grove made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

“It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of K-9 Apollo on Monday, November 16, 2020.” District 15 said Wednesday. “During his career, Apollo amassed an impressive record of narcotic and currency seizures, including 683,302.38 grams of illegal narcotics with a street value of $8,160,085.88 and currency seizures totaling $6,352,159.00.”

Apollo began his career at District 15 in May 2013 and retired from police work on December 31st, 2019.

“He was the first dog in Illinois to detect a kilo of carfentanyl-laced heroin, a case that ultimately resulted in a guilty plea in Federal court,” Officers at District 15 Downers Grove said. “Like all ISP K-9’s, Apollo was a loyal, hard-working partner and friend to those with whom he worked with, he will be greatly missed by all.”
